The After Care

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN CARING FOR YOUR EXTENSIONS

How To Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions

If we usually take care of our hair with a lot of attention, when we wear hair extensions we must take care of them in a unique way. Here are a few essential steps to keep your new locks looking good:

  • Do separate your bonds at least once a week, to prevent them from matting together

    Rinse hair with tap water

Don't ever remove the hair extensions yourself

    DO ENJOY YOUR HAIR ❤️

DO TLC with your hair extensions will go a long way for their longevity.

DO NOT go bed with wet hair!!

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN YOUR PRODUCTS

SLS, Sodium Lauryl sulfate, Alcohol denat, Ethanol, SD alcohol 40, Propanol, Silicone, Isopropyl, Formaldehyde, Chlorine, Well Water

  • Pause before you plunge into washing those newly applied hair extensions!

For the first 48 hours, it's best to avoid washing , allowing the adhesive to fully bond and set.

Always use professional products. Use a sulfate/paraben-free shampoo and conditioner

When it comes to routine washes, less is more: aim for no more than three times a week to keep over-washing at bay.

Too much washing can strip the extensions of moisture, leading to dryness, damage, and premature wear.

    • Before washing, brush them to undo possible tangles.

    • Wash from the crown to the tips. Ensure you get the roots to get rid of excess oils.

    • Use only warm water, since hot water can damage the appearance of the extensions.

    • Use a mild, high-quality shampoo. There are even specific products for extensions! Consult with your hairstylist about them.

    • Conditioning is crucial. Use a mild conditioner and a conditioning mask.

Apply conditioner mid length and not on the roots to nourish them) as conditioner on the roots too close to your scalp may lead to the extensions slipping down your hair. Rinse with lukewarm water.

    • Towel dry with microfiber towel to squeeze out excess water after a shower.

    • Use a hydrating mask after shampooing 1  x week ( to replenish the moisture).

  • Brush your hair extensions with care.

It is essential to brush the hair extensions before you wear them. Do it with a brush with soft and wide bristles. Remy human hair extensions are very soft and can be damaged easily.

    • BRUSH HAIR 2 X 3 DAILY with a boar brush/ detangling hair extension brush

    • Begin a the bottom of your hair and work your way up to prevent tangling and help distribute your naturals oils throughout your hair

    • Detangle before shampooing them

    • When you brush them, avoid pulling them! Remember: these nice locks will not grow back, unlike your regular hair!

  • Dry Gently.

The heat is a great enemy for hair extensions, so it is preferable to let the hair dry in the air and not abuse the use of dryers, straightening irons and curling irons.

The secret to perfectly dried extensions starts right after washing. Instead of rubbing, opt for gently squeezing out the water and pat dry with an Extension Towel.

    Blow dry in downward position.

Start on a cool setting to protect those bonds, then gradually shift to your normal heat setting.

Elevate your extension care by applying our nourishing Hair Oil from the tips upward, carefully avoiding the bonded areas.

  • When styling, the world of heat tools is your oyster, from hair straighteners to curling tongs and beyond. Yet, the golden rule is to keep the heat low to protect your extensions.

Always remember to steer clear of the bonds with heat to prevent any mishaps.

Utilize thermal protectant to protect hair from heat.

Apply lightweight serum to the ends, avoiding roots AM & PM is a must to retain moisture and softness.

Don't use oils in excess to prevent oil build up.

  • You should also protect your hair extensions from sun, chlorine water in the pool, and seawater.

Use some anti-chlorine product or sunscreen to protect your new hair extensions.

If you swim in chlorine or saltwater (protect with a swim cap) as they both cause extreme hair dryness. The salt water will cause the hair to lose moisture immediately, leading to expansion and reducing your extensions lifespan

Before swimming, prep your hair by rinsing first with tap water then applying leave in conditioner from mid length to the ends.

Place in a ponytail and braid tightly to avoid excessive tangles and swelling.

Avoid tight ponytails or buns when activities occur in damp, steam rooms or saunas. You can secure your hair with scrunchies without being too tight, and make sure the extensions are dried immediately after with a cool blow dryer.

I advise you that when you get out of the water, gently brush your hair and unravel it completely.

  • Understanding the nuances between discolouration and fading is crucial for any professional stylist. While both phenomena may seem similar at a glance, they stem from different causes and can impact the beauty of hair extensions in unique ways. Recognizing and addressing these issues promptly can not only save the day but also elevate your expertise in managing hair extension care.

Blonde and lighter hair extensions are particularly vulnerable to discolouration, which can result from various environmental factors.

To protect these precious strands, vigilance against products containing UV protectants, sunscreens, false tanning lotions, perfumes, and some heat protectants is key.

These products can unwittingly alter your extensions' hue to unwanted shades of pink, peach, or copper, especially when mixed with hard water, leading to a chemical reaction that changes the hair's colour.

Summer intensifies these risks, with increased exposure to sun, sea, and swimming pool chemicals. Yet, the threat of discolouration isn't confined to vacations abroad; it can strike just as easily at home.

Extension Maintenance or Removal

Hair extensions require special care.  The better you care for them the more use you’ll get out of them.

The #1 RULE of handling hair extensions is to be gentle! Also you don't want to overwash your own hair, try to avoid washing your extensions too much.  Unlike your own hair, which receives natural hydration from the oils on your scalp, hair extensions dont have a natural hydration source.  Therefore keeping them hydrated is the key to keeping them shiny and in good condition.

Please do not ever try DIY attempts at extension removal. It can lead to unnecessary damage to both hair and scalp, a risk not worth taking.

Scheduling regular maintenance appointments is essential for the enduring allure and integrity of hair extensions. These sessions allow for professional assessment and adjustment of the extensions, ensuring they evolve seamlessly with the client's natural hair growth and styling needs.

Regularly checking and gently separating the bonds of your hair extensions is non-negotiable. As natural hair sheds, it can become entangled in the bonds, leading to mats and tangles that are tough to manage. Keeping those bonds separated ensures your extensions remain smooth and manageable.

Maintenance appointments should be scheduled every 2 to 3 months time period depending on the technic utilized

If you are wanting your extensions removed please reach out and we can discuss the next steps.
